Minecraft Live 2023 was a live event held on October 15, 2023 at 17:00 UTC. Like with previous Minecraft Live events, it featured a mob vote between three mobs, the crab, the armadillo, and the penguin.[1] The event also announced portions of the next major updates of Minecraft and Minecraft Legends.
Announcement
The event was announced in a video which was uploaded to the official Minecraft YouTube channel on September 13, 2023.
Events
Mob Vote
As with MINECON Earth 2017 and Minecraft Live 2020, 2021 and 2022, viewers were able to vote for a new mob to be added to the game in a future update.
The voting began on October 13, 2023 at 17:00 UTC, and ended on October 15, 2023 at 17:15 UTC. Like the previous year, the 2023 Mob Vote Event took place in an event server on Bedrock Edition, via the Minecraft Launcher, and on minecraft.net.[1] Additionally, players from mainland China were also able to vote in the China Edition launcher.[2][3]
The mob vote had three mobs to vote on: a crab, an
armadillo, and a
penguin. Jens Bergensten described the options as “cute animals” at the Minecraft China Developers Conference held in Chengdu, China on September 27.[4]
Crab
The crab spawns in mangrove swamps. The player can obtain a crab claw which allows them to place and break blocks from further away. Kelp can be used to breed crabs. Crabs also occasionally wave at players and other crabs. [2][5]
Armadillo
The armadillo spawns in savannas. It can become startled and hide in its shell when the player confronts it; it can also drop scutes (not necessarily from dying), which will be used to craft armor for wolves, offering them better protection during combat.[6]
Penguin
The penguin spawns on the stony shore biome. Penguins increase the speed of the player's boat. Penguins are amphibious, living both in the water and on land. Although clumsy when walking and might fall down occasionally, the penguins are excellent swimmers and can swim as fast as the dolphins. They gather in groups.[7][2]
Result
Near the end of the live stream, it was revealed that the Armadillo won the vote. The percentage results were announced shortly after the end of the event on Minecraft's official Twitter account[8].
Rank | Mob | Votes | Votes (%)[8] |

News
Minecraft Live 2023 announced the yet-unnamed 1.21 update to Minecraft, which includes the voted-in armadillo, the trial chambers, several new copper blocks such as the copper bulb, new types of tuff and deepslate, the crafter block, the trial spawner, and the breeze. New mobs and structures for Minecraft Legends were also announced, such as the frog mount, witches, clangers, and air chopper.
Trivia
- The crabs in the announcement video resemble fiddler crabs (genus Uca), a type of mangrove crabs, whose males are known for having one claw much larger than the other.
- The armadillos in the announcement video resemble three-banded armadillos (genus Tolypeutes), known for their ability to curl themselves into a ball.
- The penguins in the announcement video resemble crested penguins (genus Eudyptes), known for their yellow crests and red beaks.
- This year was the first Minecraft Live to not take place on a Saturday at 12:00 EDT.
- Similarly to how Minecraft Live 2022 and 2023 both took place on October 15th, breaking the Saturday pattern, 1.20 and 1.19 both released on June 7th, breaking the Tuesday pattern.
- The mob vote mobs for this year are, as of 2023, the only ones which have been based off of real life animals.
